A Maryland man wanted for murder and multiple assaults was nabbed by federal agents in Auburn after nearly a year on the run, the U.S. Marshals Service said Tuesday.
Ja’bril Roynell Walters, 31, was arrested in Auburn and charged as a fugitive from justice, accused in Maryland of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, use of a firearm in a violent crime, and five counts of first-degree assault.
The Maine Violent Offender Task Force tracked down Walters following a lead from their counterparts in Maryland’s Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. Authorities suspected Walters had fled north and was living under an alias.
The manhunt spanned several towns in Androscoggin County — including Durham, Lewiston, and Auburn — before investigators zeroed in on a residence where Walters was hiding out.
According to the feds, task force members identified Walters inside the home and took him into custody without incident.
“The Maine Violent Offender Task Force will go to unlimited lengths to bring dangerous fugitives to justice in order to keep communities in Maine safe,” said Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Josh Taylor in a statement.
Walters is being held pending extradition back to Maryland.
According to a February story from the Daily Voice, Walters was suspected in the shooting death of Roy Walters, 57.
The task force that caught up with Walters includes personnel from the U.S. Marshals Service, Maine Department of Corrections, Biddeford Police, U.S. Border Patrol, ICE, the Maine National Guard’s Counterdrug Task Force, and the Coast Guard Investigative Service.
