A Strange Set of “Heroes” Indeed: Never-Trumper George Conway Honors Acquitted Sandwich Tosser With An Assault On Our Ears

Anti-Trump attorney George Conway celebrated the former Justice Department employee who threw a footlong Subway sandwich at a United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent Thursday with a musical tribute to the tune of a Bob Marley song.

A Washington, D.C., jury acquitted former DOJ employee Sean Dunn on a misdemeanor assault charge despite the incident being caught on videoand testimony from CBP agent Gregory Lairmore testifying that he โ€œcould smellโ€ the onions and mustard from the sandwich. Conway adapted the music of โ€œI Shot The Sheriffโ€ and released a video of him playing the song shortly before Dunnโ€™s acquittal.

โ€œI threw the sandwich, but I did not throw the condiments; I threw the sandwich, but I didnโ€™t throw the condiments,โ€ Conway sang while playing a guitar with a โ€œRepublican Voters Against Trumpโ€ sticker affixed to the instrument. โ€œAll around Washington D.C., theyโ€™re trying to track me down. They say they want to bring me in guilty for the spilling of some mayonnaise, for wasting all the dijon, but I say, I threw the sandwich, but I swear it had bad provolone I threw the sandwich, and they say it is a capicola offense.โ€

Okay, so I did it. In honor of Sandwich Guy, on what should be the last day of his trial, I figured out the chords. And so, with apologies to the late and great Bob Marley, I banged out this quick and (very) rough rendition of "I Threw the Sandwich."๐Ÿคฃ https://t.co/14tQBBFs1J pic.twitter.com/5dLaeaT1HW

Conway mocked United States Attorney Jeanine Pirro of the District of Columbia, who announced the intent to charge Dunn with a felony in a video she posted on X Aug. 13, in lyrics that implied Pirro enjoyed drinking wine.

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Dunnโ€™s firing in an Aug. 14ย post on X.

โ€œIf you touch any law enforcement officer, we will come after you,โ€ Bondi said. โ€œI just learned that this defendant worked at the Department of Justice โ€” NO LONGER. Not only is he FIRED, he has been charged with a felony.โ€

Prosecutors pursued a federal misdemeanor charge against Dunn after a grand jury in the District refused to indict him on felony charges.

Lead defense attorney Sabrina Shroff claimed during the trial that gag gifts given to Lairmore by fellow agents, including a โ€œfelony footlongโ€ patch and a plush toy shaped like a sandwich, indicated knowledge that the case was overblown, the Los Angeles Times reported. Shroff previously defended two attorneys accused of firebombing a New York Police Department vehicle in Brooklyn during the 2020 George Floyd riots, according to CNN.

Conway, a co-founder of the anti-Trump Lincoln Project, attended the Washington โ€œNo Kingsโ€ protest wearing a shirt reading, โ€œI am Antifa.โ€ Conway was married to Kellyanne Conway, a top advisor to President Donald Trump during his first term, but they announced their divorce in March 2023.
