State Rep. Kristen Cloutier announced Thursday she is resigning from her seat representing District 94, effective immediately, after seven years in the Maine Legislature.
In a letter dated on Halloween, Cloutier said the decision was made with “mixed emotions,” calling it both an honor and a privilege to have represented the people of Lewiston.
Cloutier said she will take on a new role as chief of staff to Senate President Mattie Daughtry. The position, she said, will allow her more time with her family as her daughter transitions from high school to college while continuing her work in public policy.
Together with Sen. Daughtry, Rep. Cloutier was instrumental in pushing Maine’s Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program in the previous legislature, creating a new tax for the state’s employers.
She thanked colleagues in the Legislature for their support, noting she was proud to help advance initiatives such as Paid Family and Medical Leave and expanded caregiver support during her tenure.
Cloutier concluded by directing constituents seeking assistance to contact State Sen. Peggy Rotundo. It is not yet clear who will run for her now open seat.
