A Woodland Pulp worker who was exposed to a gas leak at the Baileyville mill has died, officials said.

The deceased employee, a University of Maine intern, was among mill workers injured in the leak Tuesday night.

Injured workers were being treated at Calais Hospital for exposure, a mill spokesman said.

The Baileyville Fire Department was summoned Tuesday night to the mill after employees were overcome by a gas release.

Once on the scene, they worked to evacuate everyone into waiting EMS units.

Officials say the toxic gas was contained to the bleach plant at the mill.

Authorities were trying to determine the source of the gas leak.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was on scene, and the mill was cooperating with its investigation, Beal said.

A dead worker was identified as Kasie Malcom, a University of Maine junior majoring in chemical engineering.

โ€œThe loss of a student is heartbreaking and our thoughts are with Kasieโ€™s family, friends, classmates, faculty, and all who knew and cared for him,โ€ UMaine officials Joan Ferrini-Mundy, president, and Andrea Gifford, dean of students, said in a statement. โ€œWe recognize that news like this can be very distressing and may bring up many emotions. Please know that you are not alone and support is available.โ€
