AUGUSTA, Maine – Gov. Janet Mills (D) is urging Maine people to brace for a significant winter storm and lingering extreme cold, announcing that all State of Maine offices will be closed Monday, January 26, 2026.
The storm is forecast to begin this afternoon and continue through the day Monday, with snow expected to fall steadily across much of the state. Forecasts call for 12 to 18 inches of snow in Southern Maine, with up to 12 inches possible in the Kennebec Valley and Greater Bangor.
With blowing and drifting snow likely, officials are warning of hazardous travel conditions statewide.
Cold temperatures that began over the weekend are also expected to persist into the week, prompting Mills to caution residents to take care when outdoors.
“Maine people are used to cold winter weather, but these conditions still require caution,” Mills said. “I encourage everyone to take the forecast seriously, take precautions, limit travel if possible, and give plenty of room to our snow fighters and first responders working to keep our roads and communities safe.”
The Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) said it is closely coordinating with the Maine Department of Transportation, Maine’s electric utilities, and local emergency management partners to monitor the storm and keep people safe.
