The Maine State Police Bomb Squad responded Saturday to two separate incidents involving military explosives discovered at private residences in Bowdoinham and Winslow.

In Bowdoinham, the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance at about 2:27 p.m. on March 21 after responding to a complaint from an individual who found a possible mortar round on their property on White Road.

Maine State Police Bomb Technicians Wing and Pescitelli responded to the scene and identified the item as an 81MM M374 mortar round. X-ray analysis showed indicators that the item could be potentially hazardous. The round was removed from the residence and taken to a secure location where it will be rendered safe.

Later that afternoon in Winslow, at about 3:36 p.m., Winslow fire and police responded to a residence on Main Street after a hand grenade was found while the complainant was cleaning out the home.

First responders requested assistance from the Maine State Police Bomb Squad, and Technician Pina responded to the scene. The grenade was identified as a live standard MK2 hand grenade from the World War II or Korean War era. It was removed from the residence and will be rendered safe in a secure location.
