The Canadian government has announced a new voluntary program to buy out oyster harvesters on the country’s Atlantic coast suffering major financial losses due to the spread of disease.
The commercial sector in the Canadian provinces of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, just northeast of Maine, has been devastated by the spread of an oyster-killing infection.
“Oysters have been harvested in Atlantic Canada for generations, and the diseases moving through these populations are a serious threat to that,” Canada Minister of Fisheries Joanne Thompson said, as quoted by SeafoodSource.com.
“I know this is a hard moment for the people who make their living on the water,” Thompson said. “For harvesters who decide the time is right to permanently retire a license or permit, this program is there to support that decision.”
Thompson said the government’s intervention will help give scientists time to keep working on the disease, according to Nathan Strout of Seafood Source.

Janet Mills will NOT ALLOW any discussion about this .
Shut Up about it !
It’s just like the lettuce and peppers was …..when the CDC issues a public warning , only then will she allow HER media to alert the public .
Wanna bet Platner’s little oyster garden will be worth “ several million “ in a buyout ???
I just knew Mr. Splatner should have diversified into a line of porta-potties when he had the market at his doorstep. Looks like he’ll end up on the dole with the rest of his admirers.
Hey Janet !
It’s called Vibrio Vulnificus …..
Be sure to tell your alphabet news buddies NOT say or talk about THAT !
Aren’t YOU the one who’s been talking about the consequences of rising water temperatures from “ Climate Change “ ?
Here you go babe !
“I know this is a hard moment for the people who make their living on the water,” Thompson said. “For harvesters who decide the time is right to permanently retire a license or permit, this program is there to support that decision.”
Interesting wording. Kind of like: Canada doesn’t deny entry, just permission to leave.
The simple “cure” for Vibrio Vulnificus in shell fish is simple. . . proper cooking eradicates it every time. No rocket science there.
So Planter did have that disease, now Canada is suing him!!
