Two people were shot early Wednesday near the Blue Goose Tavern on Sabattus Street in Lewiston, prompting a significant police response and bringing Maine State Police Major Crimes detectives to the scene, according to multiple sources who contacted The Maine Wire.

The shooting occurred around 1 a.m., near bar-closing time, in the area of the Blue Goose Tavern at 69 Sabattus St. The Maine Wire observed a substantial law enforcement presence at the scene several hours later as investigators worked to determine exactly what happened.

At least four investigators believed to be associated with the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit were at the scene Wednesday morning, photographing and documenting the area as part of what appeared to be a reconstruction of the shooting.

The Maine State Police says its Major Crimes Units investigate homicides throughout Maine, although the presence of Major Crimes detectives does not by itself confirm that Wednesday’s shooting was fatal.

One of the victims was described by sources as a 38-year-old man who suffered two gunshot wounds and was transported by ambulance to an area hospital.

The man appeared to drift between consciousness and unconsciousness as emergency medical personnel moved him into the ambulance, according to information obtained by The Maine Wire. His condition at the hospital was not immediately available Wednesday morning.

A second person was also reportedly struck by gunfire. Details about that victim, including the person’s age, condition and where they were transported, were not immediately available.

As of approximately 6:30 a.m., neither Lewiston Police nor Maine State Police appeared to have issued a public news release identifying the victims, announcing an arrest or confirming whether either victim had died.

The Maine Wire is therefore not reporting the shooting as a homicide at this time.

The large Major Crimes presence, however, underscores the seriousness of the investigation. Investigators could be seen using cameras and examining the shooting scene hours after the initial emergency response.

The Blue Goose Tavern is located at 69 Sabattus St., just outside Lewiston’s downtown core.

Wednesday morning’s shooting comes as Lewiston continues to confront persistent gun violence, including shootings involving both adults and juveniles.

Lewiston Police’s Criminal Investigations Division handles major criminal offenses within the city, while Maine State Police routinely provides investigative assistance in serious cases.

It was not immediately clear what led to the gunfire, whether the shooting occurred inside or outside the tavern, how many shots were fired, or whether investigators had identified a suspect.

No information was immediately available regarding arrests.

The Maine Wire has reached out for additional information and will update this breaking story as police identify the victims, clarify their conditions and release additional details about the investigation.
