Roughly three in five Mainers view President Donald Trump’s job performance negatively, according to the latest Pine Tree State Poll, a States of Opinion Project conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center.
Approval of the president’s job performance, however, varied sharply by political affiliation, as 90 percent of Republicans approved of his job performance, compared with just 4 percent of Democrats.
Meanwhile, 34 percent of independent respondents said they support President Trump’s performance in office.
Those figures remained largely unchanged when respondents were asked about Trump’s handling of the economy and foreign affairs.
Mainers were also asked for their opinions of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
Thirty percent said they view the group favorably, while 44 percent said they view the DSA negatively. Just over half of independents said they had a negative opinion of the DSA.
Among Republicans, 89 percent viewed the DSA negatively, compared with 8 percent of Democrats. By contrast, 56 percent of Democrats had a favorable opinion of the group.
Twenty-four percent of both Democrats and independents held a neutral view of the DSA, compared with just 6 percent of Republicans.
The survey also asked Mainers to evaluate several ideologies, including capitalism, socialism, communism, and fascism.
None of these ideologies was viewed positively by a statewide majority. Among surveyed Mainers, 48 percent said they have a very or somewhat positive view of capitalism, while 39 percent said the same of socialism.
The vast majority of Mainers view communism and fascism negatively, with just 7 percent and 0 percent holding a favorable opinion of them, respectively.
Socialism, however, is substantially more popular among younger Mainers. Majorities in both age groups expressed a positive view of socialism, while the opposite was true among older respondents.
Nearly half of the younger demographic views capitalism negatively, as do more than half of Mainers ages 35 to 49, the second-youngest age group.
Although overall support for communism was relatively low, Maine’s youngest adults appear to favor it at more than twice the rate of any other age group.
Seventeen percent of Mainers ages 18 to 34 said they have a positive or somewhat positive view of communism, compared with 7 percent in the next age bracket.
Just 2 percent of those ages 50 to 64 and 1 percent of those 65 and older had a positive opinion of communism.
Opposition to fascism was nearly universal across all age groups.
This survey was conducted between July 15, 2026, and July 20, 2026. 1,236 Mainers participated in the survey, and there was a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent.
Let them smoke a few more joints and then ask them again …..
The ones with any brains and initiative are packing their bags , not answering telephone surveys from the DSA .
Ask the ones who are left at home , waiting for their phones to ring these three questions .
Ask them to define “fascism “ …..when they give you a blank stare ask them these three questions .

I noticed my first leftist teacher in high school in 1968. Up until then my teachers were content with the United States – some even extolled how bad life was in the USSR compared to life in America.

Maine “vacationland”…too many examples it seems to list as to why Maine’s young folks would “think” (?) socialism is the way.
However, I will add this: Why the “Pine Tree State” instead of “Vacationland”. Changes the headline a bit, wouldn’t you agree?
