A New Hampshire man was arrested on Thursday after he allegedly attacked an NH state trooper unprovoked and attempted to steal his firearm after following him to a parking lot.

At approximately 2:00 p.m., an NH State Trooper was parked in a lot on Dover Point Road in Dover, completing administrative tasks in his cruiser.

While the trooper was stopped, another vehicle pulled up next to him in the parking lot, and the driver got out and allegedly approached the trooper while holding a stick and a metal tool.

The man allegedly continued to approach and became verbally aggressive.

The trooper attempted to identify the man, and the suspect allegedly punched the trooper and tore his uniform before reportedly attempting to steal the trooper’s gun.

Following a lengthy struggle, the trooper gained the upper hand and arrested the suspect, who was identified as Jonathan G. Newcomb, 53, of Dover.

Newcomb was transported to the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital for treatment for minor injuries. The trooper was also taken to the hospital for examination, and both men have since been released.

Newcomb was arrested and charged with felony criminal threatening, attempting to take a firearm from law enforcement, driving while intoxicated, stalking, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, assault on a police officer, criminal mischief, and theft.

He was transported to the Strafford County Jail, though the NH State Police said that no booking photo was available.
