WASHINGTON – Vice President JD Vance is taking on another major assignment for the Trump administration, this time leading a U.S. delegation to Pakistan for high-stakes peace talks with Iran.
As of April 2026, Vance is scheduled to lead the American delegation to Islamabad, where the first round of in-person negotiations is set to begin Saturday morning, April 11, 2026, local time. He will be joined by Middle East special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Vance has played a key role in the discussions and will now serve as the president’s lead for this next phase of diplomacy.
The talks come after a two-week ceasefire announced earlier this week following direct conflict between the United States and Iran. The negotiations are aimed at reaching a longer-term resolution, with Pakistan serving as a broker in the discussions.
One of the biggest obstacles heading into the talks is a dispute over whether the ceasefire extends to Lebanon. Iran and Pakistan have said Lebanon is included, while the United States and Israel have maintained that it is not. Vance has described that disagreement as a misunderstanding, but it remains a major issue as negotiators prepare to meet.
Another central issue is the Strait of Hormuz. The Trump administration has made the immediate and secure reopening of the strategic waterway a key condition of any broader agreement, underscoring the broader economic and security stakes tied to the weekend talks.
There had also been questions about whether Vance would attend because of security concerns in Islamabad. Despite that uncertainty, the White House confirmed this week that he will lead the delegation in person.
For Vance, the trip adds another major responsibility to an already crowded portfolio. While playing a prominent role in the administration’s broader fraud crackdown at home, including scrutiny involving Maine, he is now also stepping into one of the most sensitive foreign policy efforts facing the White House.
