An individual arrested by Bangor Police on Saturday was found unresponsive inside a housing cell at the Penobscot County Jail later that same day and was pronounced dead after lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful.
According to a media release, the individual was arrested following an incident in the City of Bangor on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at approximately 11:50 a.m. The person was transported to the Penobscot County Jail, where medical staff conducted a screening and the individual completed the standard intake process.
The individual was unable to post bail and remained in custody.
After several hours, the person was assigned to a housing cell and continued communicating with correctional staff without incident, according to officials.
During routine inmate population checks at approximately 9:35 p.m., correctional officers found the individual unresponsive inside the cell.
Correctional and medical staff immediately began lifesaving measures. Bangor Ambulance personnel also assisted after arriving at the jail.

Despite those efforts, the individual could not be resuscitated and was pronounced deceased.
Officials said there were no reported altercations involving staff or other inmates during the individual’s time at the jail. Preliminary information indicates the person suffered a medical event, though the official cause and manner of death remain under investigation.
The Bangor Police Department responded and conducted an investigation in accordance with established procedures. The Maine Department of Corrections and the Maine Office of Chief Medical Examiner were also notified.
The identity of the deceased has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
Officials said the investigation remains active and that additional information will be released as it becomes available and as the investigation allows.
