“At the time of this statement, authorities have not yet released the name of the individual involved. On behalf of our entire school district, I offer my sincere condolences and sympathies to the family and friends impacted by this tragedy,” said Maine School Administrative District 20 Superintendent Melanie Blais.
“The loss of a student is always difficult and can be extremely hard for many school community members. Our school counselors will be made available to any student or staff member needing assistance,” she added.
Blais’ statement came after The Maine Warden Service announced on Monday that it was investigating an ATV crash in Fort Fairfield that left a 15-year-old dead.
At around 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, two 15-year-old boys were driving behind a home on Old East Road.
The driver reportedly made a hard left turn while accelerating, causing the vehicle to lift up, skid, and roll over.
The 15-year-old passenger died at the scene, and the driver was transported to Cary Medical Center in Caribou with non-life-threatening injuries.
Neither of the ATV’s occupants was wearing helmets or seatbelts at the time of the crash.
