The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents about a scammer impersonating a deputy and informing residents that they have jury duty.

According to the department, a person has been contacting county residents, claiming to be a lieutenant with the sheriff’s department, and telling them that they have or have missed jury duty.

The scammers then request a transfer of funds or gift cards for the victim to avoid any adverse impacts.

The Sheriff’s Department reminded the public that deputies are not responsible for any jury-duty-related notifications.

They urged anyone who receives a call, text, or other communication threatening arrest or a fine related to jury duty to immediately hang up.
