Homeland Security Investigations agents partnered with local law enforcement in Southern California to disrupt multiple fraud operations this week, seizing dozens of SIM card and cellular devices tied to malicious text messages, identically seen in Maine.
The operation was announced by authorities in a post on X by HSI Los Angeles, showing the seized equipment used to generate fraudulent text message notices being seen from Los Angeles to Bangor.ย
Agencies from Cumberland County to La-La-Land, have warned residents of these scams impersonating court officials, demanding immediate payment for fake violations, many times preying on senior-citizens.

The photographs released in the HSI announcement evidenced rows of black electronic devices and antennas known as โSIM Boxesโ, laid out on pavement and inside a residence, with an example of a fraudulent text message shown.

Interestingly, law enforcement agencies like the Maine State Police and Cumberland County Sheriffโs Department issued alerts on April 18, 2026 regarding mirrored message templates with forged documents. Typically, these messages lure unsuspecting individuals into remitting payment through a QR code to settle non-existent fines or penalties, profiting scammers directly. Officials emphasize the importance of not scanning QR codes, as it could inadvertently compromise personal or financial information through simple mistaken access.
The Cumberland County Sheriffโs Department explicitly warns that the documents are inauthentic and that no legitimate court would demand payment through an unsolicited text message.ย
Interpreting the parallel nature of the scams, it is clear both are imitation scams with identical methods of deployment, pointing to potential national coordination with Maine reports surfacing. While the number of Maine victims remains unclear, counties across the state have logged complaints over the past month. These developments highlight the prominence of emerging technologies and adversarial ability to disproportionately prey on unsuspecting citizens using a simple SMS-text message.
