GENEVA, Ohio – President Donald Trump made a high-profile appearance Tuesday at the finale of the inaugural Patriot Games in Geneva, Ohio, where teenage athletes from across the country competed for $250,000 in college scholarship money as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration.
Among the competitors was Lewiston High School junior Liam Jones, who represented Maine during the three-day tournament at SPIRE Academy.
Trump attended the Aug. 11 championship round alongside ESPN personality and former NFL punter Pat McAfee, watching as the remaining competitors battled through a final obstacle course designed to test strength, speed, agility and endurance.
The Patriot Games were organized by Freedom 250 as part of the broader celebration surrounding the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The competition brought together 120 high school athletes between the ages of 14 and 17 representing all 50 states, U.S. territories and tribal nations.
Over three days, competitors faced a wide range of challenges, including dodgeball, kickball, tug-of-war, a Presidential Fitness Test and a military-inspired boot camp circuit.
The field was eventually narrowed to eight finalists, who competed in an American Ninja Warrior-style obstacle course featuring ropes, monkey bars, climbing walls and other physical challenges.
Kennadi Fuhrman of Kansas and Rockwell Myers of Utah were ultimately crowned the female and male champions.
Each winner received $125,000 in college scholarship money.
For Maine, the event provided a national spotlight for Jones, a Class of 2028 student at Lewiston High School.
The 16-year-old is a multi-sport athlete who has competed in both football and baseball for the Blue Devils. Jones has played quarterback and wide receiver and has also earned recognition for his academic performance at Lewiston High School.
Lewiston Superintendent Jake Langlais publicly congratulated Jones before the competition, highlighting his opportunity to represent Maine on the national stage.
Jones told Maine media that the event gave him an opportunity to compete against talented athletes from around the country while also competing for substantial scholarship money.
Maine also had a second athlete listed as a state representative, Rebekah Roberts.
Roberts, however, has identified herself as being from Cornish, New Hampshire, and attends Mid Vermont Christian School. It remains unclear why she was selected to represent Maine rather than New Hampshire.
Roberts has previously been connected to a high-profile dispute involving transgender participation in girls’ sports.

Mid Vermont Christian School forfeited a girls’ basketball tournament game in 2023 rather than compete against a team with a transgender athlete. The school’s decision later became part of a broader legal dispute over Vermont’s athletic policies.
Roberts referenced that controversy in her Patriot Games application materials, presenting the school’s decision as an example of standing by its principles.
Freedom 250 has said athletes were selected using a combination of athletic qualifications, essays and video submissions.
Trump’s appearance at Tuesday’s finale brought additional national attention to the competition.
McAfee joined Trump at the event and sat near the president as the final athletes completed the championship round.
The Patriot Games are among a series of events connected to the country’s semiquincentennial celebration, with organizers describing the competition as a test of athletic ability, teamwork, resilience and patriotism.
The tournament streamed on ESPN platforms during the three-day competition.
A one-hour television special featuring highlights from the Patriot Games is scheduled to air nationally on ABC Thursday, Aug. 13, at 9 p.m.
For Maine viewers, the broadcast will provide another opportunity to see a Lewiston athlete competing on a national stage, this time representing the Pine Tree State in a competition tied directly to America’s 250th birthday.
