In early July, the Cumberland Sheriff’s Department received information suggesting that a suspect had abused a young child.
Following weeks of investigation, detectives identified Jeremy Carter, 34, of Standish as a suspect.
Detectives secured an arrest warrant for Carter and, on Thursday morning, he was taken into custody.
He was charged with gross sexual assault, unlawful sexual contact, unlawful sexual touching, sexual exploitation of a minor, and possession of child sexual abuse material.
Carter was transported to the Cumberland County Jail, where he was issued $50,000 bail, with conditions requiring him to avoid any direct or indirect contact with girls under the age of 16 and to possess no sexually explicit material.
