After Democrats in Maine’s House of Representatives narrowly passed Governor Janet Mills’ controversial late-term abortion bill in the early hours of Friday morning, the Maine Democratic Party took to Twitter to applaud the Governor for signing a bill banning small lead weights to protect loons.
Hours of prolonged debate and procedural maneuvering culminated in a 74-72 vote to pass LD 1619, which if passed by the Senate and signed by Gov. Mills would eliminate the state’s current viability restriction on abortion.
The vague guardrails on late-term abortions would then fall to the discretion of doctors, under applicable “standards of care,” which medical and legal experts have said would allow almost unrestricted elective abortion on otherwise healthy babies up until birth.
Rather than celebrate the House Democrats’ victory on pushing late-term abortion one step closer to becoming legal, on Friday morning Maine’s Democratic Party appeared to be more preoccupied with the lives of the state’s loons.
On Tuesday Gov. Mills signed LD 958, “An Act to Expand Protections to Maine’s Loons from Lead Poisoning by Prohibiting the Sale and Use of Certain Painted Lead Jigs,” into law.
The new law bans the sale of painted lead jigs under a certain size and weight after Sep. 1, 2024, and bans their use after Sep. 1, 2026.
LD 958 was sponsored by Democratic Rep. Allison Hepler of Woolwich, who also cosponsored Gov. Mills’ late-term abortion bill.
Sen. Eric Brakey (R-Androscoggin) slammed the Maine Democratic Party on Twitter Friday morning for celebrating their “feel-good” protection of loons from lead poisoning after House Democrats voted to legalize abortions up until birth.
“Are you kidding me?” Sen. Brakey said. “Maine Democrats vote to legalize killing healthy third trimester babies in the womb and then pat themselves on the back for a feel-good bill on loons.”
“Human lives matter,” Brakey added.
LD 958 is just the latest instance of Maine Democrats placing a higher value on the lives of wildlife than on post-viability fetuses.

In April, Democratic Rep. Sally Cluchey of Bowdoinham advocated for an amendment that would compel Maine’s hunters to give coyotes a “respectful burial” — on the same day she cosponsored LD 1619.
“It’s a life, regardless of what sort of value people put on it,” Rep. Cluchey said at an April Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee work session in support of her proposed amendment.
“You don’t have to eat it or use its hide, you can just bury it respectfully,” Cluchey said.
One word: Asininity.
