FBI Director Christopher Wray denied that the agency is protecting President Joe Biden or his family during a Wednesday House Judiciary Committee hearing.
The hearing marks the first time the FBI Director has testified before the Judiciary Committee since the Republicans won their majority in the 2022 midterm elections.
House Republicans have been eager to investigate the politicization of the nation’s preeminent law enforcement agency under Director Wray and the weaponization of the Department of Justice under Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fl.) pressed Wray to respond to a WhatsApp text from Hunter Biden to a Chinese businessman in which he appeared to demand payment while saying his father Joe Biden was in the room with him.

Rep. Gaetz read a portion of Hunter Biden’s text message, then asked the FBI Director: “Sounds like a shakedown, doesn’t it Director?”
“I’m not going to get into comment about that,” Director Wray responded.
“You seem deeply uncurious about it, don’t you?” Gaetz pressed. “Almost suspiciously uncurious. Are you protecting the Bidens?”
“Absolutely not,” Wray answered. “The FBI does not, has no interest in protecting anyone politically.”
“You won’t answer the question about whether or not that [text] is a shakedown, and everybody knows why you won’t answer it,” Gaetz followed up.
“To the millions of people who will see this, they know it is. And your inability to acknowledge that is deeply revealing about you,” Gaetz said.
Below is the full WhatsApp message, attested to by IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley, Hunter Biden sent to Henry Zhao, who ran an investment fund and is a Communist Party official in the People’s Republic of China:
“[We] obtained a July 30th, 2017, WhatsApp message from Hunter Biden to Henry Zhao, where Hunter Biden wrote: ‘I am sitting here with my father and we would like to understand why the commitment made has not been fulfilled. Tell the director that I would like to resolve this now before it gets out of hand, and now means tonight. And, Z, if I get a call or text from anyone involved in this other than you, Zhang, or the chairman, I will make certain that between the man sitting next to me and every person he knows and my ability to forever hold a grudge that you will regret not following my direction. I am sitting here waiting for the call with my father.’”
