In an interview this weekend with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, NBC Reporter Dasha Burns falsely characterized efforts by state-level Democrats to legalize elective late-term abortions up until birth.
DeSantis, who is running for the GOP presidential nomination, responded to an inquiry about abortion, stating that he would not support broad late-term abortion bills, such as the bill Gov. Janet Mills just signed into law.
That bill will allow for healthy women to abort healthy babies for any reason and at any point during a pregnancy, so long as an abortion clinic doctor signs off on it.
“I would not allow what a lot of the left wants to do, which is to override pro life protections throughout the country all the way up really until the moment of birth in some instances, which I think is infanticide,” said DeSantis.
At that point, Burns chimed in with “push back.”
“I gotta push back on you on that because that that’s a misrepresentation of what’s happening. I mean, that 1.3% of abortions happen at 21 weeks,” Burns said.
“There’s no evidence of Democrats pushing for abortions up until-“
Burns appeared unfamiliar with the facts surrounding state-level policies concerning late-term abortion.
The new late-term abortion law in Maine supports DeSantis’ claims, as do similar bills passed in Colorado and New York.
Late-term abortions are rare, as Burns said, but DeSantis never claimed otherwise.
The DeSantis-Burns exchange was first flagged by Curtis Houck of Newsbusters in a Twitter thread. Houck also highlights national legislative efforts which also aimed to secure late-term abortions.
