Portland Police announced Monday that a man has been arrested on murder charges in connection to an assault last Friday at the Forest Ave. YMCA in Portland that led to the death of a 60-year-old man.
Police responded to a report of an assault at 70 Forest Ave. (YMCA of Southern Maine) shortly before 1 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 12.
60-year-old David Hannauer was found unconscious and suffering from serious injuries, according to police.
Meaghan Woodsome, Chief Administrative Officer of the YMCA of Southern Maine, said in a Monday statement that Hannauer was a member of the YMCA’s men’s dormitory program, and staff administered first aid to Hannauer until police arrived.
Hannauer was transported to Maine Medical Center, where he died Saturday afternoon.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy on Hannauer Sunday morning, and ruled his death a homicide.
Robert Lancaster, 49, of Portland, had been arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault in connection to the incident, and was being held at Cumberland County Jail since Friday morning.
Following the autopsy, detectives have arrested Lancaster and charged him with the murder to Hannauer.
Lancaster is being held at Cumberland County Jail without bail.
