An Androscoggin Sheriff’s Deputy was shot early Wednesday morning while responding to a call about an unspecified disturbance at a Minot residence.
Androscoggin County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the complaint at 1089 Woodman Hill Road, Minot, which resulted in one deputy being shot in the leg, according to a statement from the Maine State Police.
Police received the call at 4:05am, and responded to the unspecified complaint.
While deputies were investigating the disturbance, an altercation ensued which resulted in an unnamed male suspect shooting the officer, who was also unnamed.
After the altercation, a fire was started in the 1089 Woodman Hill Road residence, which required crews from nearby fire departments to respond to extinguish the fire.
The Maine State Police did not indicate whether the shooting suspect is also believed to be responsible for the fire, or whether the fire was started deliberately.
Following the incident, the injured deputy was transported to the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he will undergo surgery. His injury was not considered life-threatening.
The male suspect is currently being held in police custody.
Investigators from the State Police and from the Fire Marshals are examining the evidence and conducting interviews at and around the crime scene.
Following the incident, police released an update providing additional information, and correcting a previous statement.
Police corrected the original release, clarifying that the residence was already on fire by the time deputies arrived, and released the name of the suspect, Corey Hamel, 42.
Hamel had a criminal record, and was on probation following three violations of supervised release.
He is now being charged with arson and aggravated attempted murder following Wednesday’s incident.
