An effort by Democratic state lawmakers to establish Maine as a “sanctuary state” for child sex-change procedures and late-term abortions drew strong condemnation Monday from the attorneys general of 15 other U.S. states.
In a letter spearheaded by Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti, the 15 AGs warned that Maine could face lawsuits from other states if it were to adopt the proposed statute, LD 227.
“If Maine pursues LD 227‘s constitutionally defective approach, we will vigorously avail ourselves of every recourse our Constitution provides,” the AGs wrote.
In the letter, the AGs referred to the bill as a “far-reaching” and “unprecedented” attempt to impose on the rest of the country “Maine’s views on hotly debated issues such as gender transition surgeries for children.”
LD 227 aims to expand legal protections for medical professionals and others involved in what critics describe as the mutilation of children under the guise of “gender affirming” medical care.
This controversial proposal also extends legal protections to medical professionals who provide late-term abortions to women from states where those procedures may be illegal, setting up Maine to become a destination for so-called “abortion tourism.”
But it also seeks to extend the same protections to individuals who bring minors to Maine for sex-change procedures or abortions, including individuals who are not parents or guardians of the minors.
The bill, if adopted, would protect virtually anyone who trafficked a minor into the state of Maine for the purposes of obtaining an abortion, sex-change hormones, or sex-change surgeries.
Rep. Laurel Libby (R-Auburn), a conservative lawmaker who helped organize a massive protest against the bill last week, posted a copy of the letter to her social media, encouraging her followers to read and share the message.
In addition to Skrmetti, AGs from Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and several other red states joined the letter.
The bill, officially entitled the “Maine Healthcare Freedom Act,” was introduced through a tactic known as a “concept draft bill,” allowing for a massive amendment to be substituted on short notice, thereby reducing public scrutiny.
This technique, used to advance the legislation with minimal public awareness, has sparked criticism for undermining the legislative process’ transparency.
Despite the legislative sleight-of-hand, more than three hundred Mainers turned up to the State House last week to protest against the policy.
The legislation would also categorize attempts by other states to interfere with cross-border provision of sex-change procedures for minors as “hostile litigation,” theoretically allowing targeted individuals to counter-sue in Maine. This would create a private right for medical providers and those who traffick individuals into Maine to sue law enforcement, prosecutors, or other officials in other states.
Critics argued last week at the State House that LD 227 represents an unprecedented overreach, setting policies on complex scientific, medical, moral, and cultural debates not just for Maine but for the entire nation.
“An effort by [very sick, demented, ideologically driven, out of touch, totalitarian] Democratic state lawmakers to establish Maine as a “sanctuary state” for child sex-change procedures and late-term abortions drew strong condemnation Monday from the attorneys general of 15 other U.S. states.”
Trans and “sex changes” (which can not be done anyways) is clearly a mental health issue.
If this passes, I hope they sue the crap out of the State. Yes, it’s gonna use up a lot of tax dollars but the Demorats need to be taught a lesson.
Bye-bye rainy day fund, see you in court. Get ready to see higher taxes to pay for defending these morons.
Last time I checked you can’t change your DNA. You can however have yourself mutilated or in the case of a child, a “responsible” adult have you mutilated. So you know you can’t have children later in life, or due to your remorse, alienation, and depression commit suicide. Sounds like a winner of an idea.
This just in from The Guardian 3/12/24…”UK bands all puberty blockers for children under 18″. England’s National Institute for Health has made a landmark decision “in the best interests of the children”. OK, now will Maine legislators stop pushing their insanity or be held liable? Do your due diligence, research the facts and spread the word.
UK just outlawed puberty blockers. Somebody tell the great Anne Perry.
Maybe we can also provide sanctuary Brits and others around the world
Wake up Maine.
.
$60 million to mutilate children. Sick.
What ever happened to the Party of “States Rights”?
Being a “Concept Bill”, I suggest a change to the name: “An Act to Rid Maine of the Democrat Party.”
I hope one day there will be a litany of legal cases suing the state & all those who allowed LD 227 to happen.
