The Maine Democratic Socialists of America (Maine DSA) and the Maine Direct Action Solidarity Fund has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise bail money for their “comrades” who may be arrested during future pro-Palestine protests.
According to a post shared to Maine DSA’s Instagram page, the crowdfunding campaign is “to raise bail funds for an upcoming action,” with the goal of raising a total of $2,723.
The “upcoming action,” which presumably would involve illegal conduct based on the need to raise bail funds, is not specified in the post.
“If you have the financial ability, please consider donating so we can reach our goal and ensure any comrades who are arrested in support of a free Palestine will be able to get out of jail,” the post reads.
“Raising bail funds is also class solidarity, as it makes participating in actions more accessible to poor and working class people,” it states.
According to the Maine Direct Solidarity Fund’s Instagram page, they first began gathering bail funds after a November 2023 pro-Palestine “sit-in” at Democratic Rep. Jared Golden’s (ME-02) Bangor office resulted in the arrests of seven people.
A similar sit-in protest at Rep. Chellie Pingree’s (ME-01) Portland office in November resulted in the arrests of five members of the Maine DSA.

The “solidarity fund” was also used to bail out the “comrades” who were arrested for blockading traffic at a February pro-Palestine protest at Exit 7 of I-295 in Portland, according to the group.
The Maine DSA has been involved in staging several pro-Palestine protests throughout the state since the Israel-Hamas war was started by the Hamas attack against Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.
A pro-Palestine rally organized by the Maine DSA in Portland’s Monument Square in October featured a speaker calling Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel “morally and legally legitimate.”
