A Berwick woman has pleaded guilty to a yearslong Social Security fraud scheme to illegally obtain benefits on behalf of her children, the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the District of Maine announced Friday.

Suzanna Hercock, 46, pleaded guilty to Social Security fraud on Friday in U.S. District Court in Portland.

In court records, federal prosecutors alleged Hercock lied to the Social Security Administration (SSA) from about December 2008 to February 2020, during which time she claimed that her husband — the children’s father — was not in her household in order to claim Supplemental Security Income (SSI) on behalf of her children.

Prosecutors alleged Hercock lied to the SSA in multiple eligibility interviews by failing to disclose her husband’s presence and income, despite knowing that she was required to do so and that doing so would affect her eligibility to receive SSI benefits.

Hercock faces up to five years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000, as well as up to three years of supervised release.

The court may also order Hercock to pay restitution to the SSA.

Her FB page shows some really nice vehicles and vacations and toys for herself and the family. Hope she gets at least ten years and loses her house! Plenty of really needy people who would never dream of stealing like this.
