Numerous world leaders, including President Joe Biden, have officially mourned the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, whose brutality earned him the nickname “The Butcher of Tehran.”

“The United States expresses its official condolences for the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian, and other members of their delegation in a helicopter crash in northwest Iran. As Iran selects a new president, we reaffirm our support for the Iranian people and their struggle for human rights and fundamental freedoms,” said Matthew Miller, U.S. State Department of State spokesman.
Raisi was pronounced dead on Monday morning, along with Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian, a provincial governor, and other officials, after their bodies were discovered following a helicopter crash.
Their helicopter went down in extreme weather over the country’s East Azerbaijan province as the officials were returning from a diplomatic mission in Azerbaijan.
Following Raisi’s death, world leaders scrambled to express their sympathy, with the European Union joining the Biden Administration in offering condolences.
The death also occasioned mourning in the United Nations, with the assembly holding a moment of silence, and U.N. security forces raising a flag to half-mast while saluting it in honor of the dead president.
“The Secretary-General is saddened by the death of H.E. Mr. Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, H.E. Mr. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Minister for Foreign Affairs and their colleagues in a helicopter accident on 19 May. The Secretary-General expresses his sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and to the Government and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” said the spokesman for U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
During his time in the Iranian government, Raisi, who served in numerous positions including as a prosecutor, gained a reputation for brutality.
He was a strong proponent and enforcer of the nation’s chastity laws, and its hijab requirements for women.
He also oversaw thousands of political executions, which, allegedly, included the executions of children.
For his role in political executions, Raisi was sanctioned under President Donald Trump in 2019.
While Iran officially held a lavish funeral and days of national mourning for the president, many Iranians across the world celebrated the death of the “butcher.”
Despite Raisi’s crimes, the sanctions imposed upon him by the U.S., and Iran’s status as a foreign adversary of the United States, the Biden Administration nevertheless believed it necessary to offer condolences for his death.

It is unclear how the president’s death will ultimately affect Iran; unlike in the U.S., the president is not the head-of-state or military commander-in-chief.
Those positions are held by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who some believed would ultimately be succeeded by Raisi.
Currently, the president’s position is filled by Mohammad Mokhber, who was the vice-present under Raisi.

What is with the suicidal naivety of some people? Usually those people are the first to use unfounded hyperbole against fairly benign people with whom they disagree as long as they are also from their own country. But they fall all over themselves to show a perverse level of respect to these animals from dictatorships just because they aren’t western or white. When someone shows you who they are, believe them. Their death to America chants aren’t performance art. They want to murder us. Why would anyone from the western world be upset he’s dead?

“This “butcher” claim comes from an event in 1988 when Ayatollah Khomeini allegedly ordered the execution of several thousand American-backed revolutionaries. However, at the time, Raisi was a 28-year-old deputy prosecutor. I just went to the Wikipedia pages relevant to this claim that Raisi was “dubbed” this, and all of the reference links are from after his death.
The single place I can find this title being ascribed to him before his death is in a 2022 Newsweek opinion piece. It was not in his Wikipedia page until after his death, when it was added to the second paragraph of the introduction.
So, after he died, he was “dubbed” this for events that took place nearly four decades earlier by various American media outlets.
You can draw your own conclusions about the events of 1988, but these were prisoners who were convicted of treason and given death sentences. It’s very different than bombing tens of thousands of children.”
