Maine Rep Pushes for Increased Tariffs on Chinese Auto, Renewable Energy Imports

The tariff would apply not only to all cars manufactured in China, but also to all imported autos manufactured by Chinese automakers, regardless of where the vehicle is assembled -- preventing China from using other nations, such as Mexico, as a way to avoid the tariff.

Democratic Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) on Friday introduced two bills seeking to increase tariffs of the importation of Chinese renewable energy products and automobiles.

“Our country imports far more goods than it exports, a trade imbalance that threatens our future and leaves us dependent on the productive capacity of our competitors,” Rep. Golden said Friday. “When it comes to our manufacturers and energy independence, Congress should privilege American industry and be relentless champions for America and our workers.”

“But industrial and trade policy aren’t just about our economy,” Golden said. “They’re about our ability to write our future on our own terms. Raising tariffs on Chinese autos and green energy technology will ensure our industrial base, and thus our future, is strong.”

The first of Golden’s two bills,  the “Declaring Our Energy Independence from China Act,” would require the president to apply an additional 25 percent tariff to all battery components, solar energy components and wind energy components imported from China.

Under Golden’s proposal, the tariff rate would also increase by an additional five percent annually for a period of five years, for a final rate of 50 percent.

The bill would also require the U.S. Trade Representative to submit a report to Congress detailing China’s industrial subsidies to its battery, solar energy and wind energy sectors over the past 15 years.

The second of Golden’s bills, the “Protecting American Autoworkers from China Act,” would increase the current tariff on Chinese auto imports by 125 percent of the base rate.

The tariff would apply not only to all cars manufactured in China, but also to all imported autos manufactured by Chinese automakers, regardless of where the vehicle is assembled — preventing China from using other nations, such as Mexico, as a way to avoid the tariff.

“Energy Independence” is far from depending on renewables parts, whether made in China or the USA. Golden is beholden to the AOC narrative. Vote the bum out.

ROFLMAO !! Jared Golden making “MAGA-like” proposals that won’t even be considered until after the elections in November ? A pathetic, and obvious use of political theater to try and secure the MAGA vote which dominates the District he usurped through “ranked choice voting”. Sounds like someone’s getting worried……
