A Guilford man initially arrested on an aggravated assault charge is now facing murder after authorities say a 63-year-old man died from multiple sharp-force injuries and a second victim was left critically injured following a violent incident Sunday evening.
Ryan Carleton, 49, of Guilford, was charged with murder Tuesday during his initial appearance at the Piscataquis County Judicial Center in connection with the death of 63-year-old Brent Doore, according to the Maine State Police.
Carleton is being held at the Piscataquis County Jail.
The investigation began shortly after 7:19 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, when the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from Maine State Police while investigating an apparent assault on Pine Street in Guilford.
Deputies had initially responded to 24 Pine Street for a wellbeing check. Moments later, authorities discovered two seriously injured adults inside a neighboring residence at 26 Pine Street.
Doore and an adult woman were rushed to the hospital.
Doore died from his injuries while being transported for medical treatment, police said. The woman survived but remains hospitalized in critical condition. Authorities have not publicly identified her.
Given the circumstances surrounding the incident, the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit–North was called in to assist.
Investigators from the sheriff’s office and Major Crimes Unit worked throughout Sunday evening and overnight alongside personnel from the Office of Chief Medical Examiner and other law enforcement partners.
Doore’s body was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where an autopsy was performed Monday.
The medical examiner determined that Doore died from multiple sharp-force injuries and ruled his death a homicide.
As the investigation progressed, Carleton was taken into custody by the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office and initially charged with aggravated assault.
That charge was elevated to murder when Carleton appeared in court Tuesday, Aug. 18.
The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit–North has taken over as the lead investigative agency, while the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office remains involved as what state police described as a “key investigative partner.”
Authorities have not released additional details about what allegedly occurred inside the Pine Street residence, what type of weapon may have been used, or the relationship between Carleton and the victims.
The investigation remains active.
