A man has been charged with manslaughter and operating under the influence after a fatal head-on collision in Gray on Saturday, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred at about 11:30 p.m. on Saturday on Portland Road near the intersection with Sugar Maple Road.

Jean Claude Nshimiyimana, 43, is accused of driving drunk in a 2022 Jeep Gladiator and crashing head-on into a 2019 Chevrolet Suburban that was traveling in the opposite direction.

Nshimiyimana, who according to arrest records has an address at an apartment in South Portland, was booked on Sunday at Cumberland County Jail on charges of manslaughter and OUI, and is being held without bail.

The driver of the 2019 Suburban, 50-year-old Daniel Fackrell of Cumberland, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Two children who were in the vehicle with Fackrell suffered non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash and were treated at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

The crash remains under investigation, but authorities suspect that speed and alcohol were factors.
