Southern Maine Towns Pool Nearly $200,000 for Taxpayer-Funded ‘Campus Style’ Migrant Housing

Several towns in Southern Maine have “donated” a total of nearly $200,000 in support of a project to build a 200-unit “campus style” housing complex for migrants spearheaded by the Greater Portland Council of Governments (GPCOG).

The project, called “Safe in Maine,” is aiming to raise a total of $2 million for the migrant housing complex, and has so far received $212,000 in donations — almost all of which has come from taxpayer-funded grants from town governments.

On the Safe in Maine Facebook page, the organization boasts that over the past two years, it has received $25,000 from the Town of Falmouth, $50,000 from Westbrook, $50,000 from Scarborough and $50,000 from Cape Elizabeth — a total of $175,000.

The project is being overseen by the Center for Regional Prosperity, the non-profit arm of GPCOG.

The Center for Regional Prosperity previously received a $4.3 million grant from the Maine State Housing Authority to fund Portland’s new 179-bed shelter focused exclusively on housing single asylum-seeking migrants that opened last November.

Belinda Ray, Director of Strategic Partnerships at GPCOG, uploaded a presentation outlining the proposed migrant housing complex in early June.

According to Ray, the Safe in Maine project seeks to provide a more long-term solution to housing migrants, compared to cities paying for migrants to be put up in hotels or shelters for months before moving into permanent housing.

Ray described the proposed housing complex as “campus style.”

“The idea here is that you would have 200 units of housing with community space,” Ray said in her presentation. “And that is a place where people could live, they would have their own kitchens — because another thing in the hotels is that there are not kitchens and the food becomes very expensive as well.”

The campus-style housing would, Ray said, provide a central location where migrants can better access other taxpayer-funded services. It’s unclear what share of the rental costs the migrants would be expected to pay — if any.

“So people would live in the transitional housing and they would have the community space where services could be provided,” she continued. “It would make it so much easier for service providers to find folks that need the services, get them in one place — it’s just an economy of scale that it creates.”

A “concept design” of the proposed housing complex shows multiple arrays of housing units, with open spaces to be used for “Soccer and futsol fields, walking trails, community gardens, and playgrounds.”

Ray said that due to the funding the project has already received, the organization has been able to review prospective parcels of land on which the complex could be constructed.

“179-bed shelter focused exclusively on housing single asylum-seeking migrants that opened last November.” And just when did the Maine Wire adopt the socialist/democrat language rather than the correct appelation of ” ILLEGAL ALIENS”?

The answer is NO!
All vacationers have to go home sooner or later.
Housing for destitute Mainers and Vets first!
Not a single dime of tax-payers money should go towards this trap unless it’s voluntarily.
America and Maine first!

And just like that, Maine has a ghetto. What’s the difference between California, New Yok and Maine? The weather.

I love the idea of providing benefit programs for first responders and teachers. Such as Affordable housing or low interest housing mortgages to enhance building strong communities. Free education/training in exchange for community service. Reduced Incarceration in exchange for CS. A path to citizenship should include CS

Just where do they propose to build this?
Certainly not Falmouth.
Portland?
With the city planning sharia compliant loans, luxury housing with more amenities than citizens in low income housing get, Portland will soon be a no go zone for whites just like they have in Great Britain and Germany and France.
Do these people proposing this ever watch what has happened in areas illegals from Africa have been catered to?
Obviously not.

It is just an other name for government ghetto. You have no compassion you just want a job so you can control by “economy of scale”. Oh look how many people I control!. America did not grow by being a GHETTO. You folks are sick.

Anyone remember what illegal migrants did to the hotels in New York? They are building a base for criminals that will turn all the surrounding towns eventually into slums. Lowering their property value and increasing their taxes

Prediction: Then the people who founded, used taxpayer dollars to fund, and pushed this project will sweep in and buy the properties for pennies on the dollar. Then they use taxpayer dollars to “clean up crime” and make millions. Keep a close look at the people spearheading this maybe we can at least put them in jail eventually.

Enough, it’s time for all of those people that came into our Country illegally to go back home. They’re nothing but a drag on our Cities. All being funded with our tax dollars. America and Americans first. They are criminal aliens.

These illegal aliens will not require a place to live as they will be deported ASAP! Remember, they are ALL criminals for having entered the USA without documentation. Federal laws have been broken – the local police, sheriffs and ICE have every right to arrest and deport every single one of them. Use the building to help MAINERS who need a safe place to live… Veterans, those living on the streets through no fault of their own. Where is the outcry for the American citizen?

Are you the citizens of Maine this stupid? You have AMERICAN citizens in Maine that need housing and you want to give it to ILLEGAL ALIENS. You already built housing just for ILLEGAL ALIENS in Brunswick, brand new apartments on taxpayers’ money. When are the people of Maine going to learn? Do the research and see where the crime rate goes up; Brunswick will be complaining in no time just like Lewiston and Portland. Keep voting those DemocRATS-Marxists in and you will have Maine identical to California
