A Portland man was struck and killed by a train near Morrill’s Corner on Tuesday evening, according to the Portland Police Department.

Police say they responded to the area of Morrill’s Corner for a report of a train striking a pedestrian shortly after 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

Brett Staples, 34, of Portland, was identified by police as the pedestrian who was struck by the train.

Staples was transported to Maine Medical Center where he later died from his injuries, police said.

The Portland Police Department and Amtrak Railroad Police are investigating the accident.

Police said on Wednesday that no charges have been filed.

Amtrak’s Downeaster train passes through Morrill’s Corner on its round-trip route from Boston to Brunswick.

An Amtrak spokesperson told the Maine Wire that the train involved was an Amtrak Downeaster train 687, traveling from Boston to Brunswick.

The spokesperson shared that “an individual who was trespassing on the track came into contact with the train” at about 8:10 p.m. on Tuesday.

There were no reported injuries to the approximately 26 passengers or crew members onboard, the spokesperson added.

“The spokesperson shared that “an individual who was trespassing on the track came into contact with the train” at about 8:10 p.m. on Tuesday.” That’s an odd way to say the person
was smashed, struck, or hit by the train

There were no reported injuries to the approximately 26 passengers or crew members onboard, …” I’m glad they made this clear as I thought the carnage on the train must have been awful.
