A Lisbon man with multiple previous state convictions for possessing and distributing child pornography pleaded guilty this week to a new federal charge of possessing child sexual abuse material, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine announced Monday.

Joseph Gibson, 36, of Lisbon, pleaded guilty Monday in U.S. District Court in Portland to one count of possessing child sexual abuse material.

According to court records, in September and October 2023, the Maine State Police identified and located an IP address at Gibson’s residence that had been used to download child sexual abuse material.

When the Maine State Police executed a search warrant at the residence in December 2023, authorities seized two devices belonging to Gibson which contained child pornography.

A follow-up investigation by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) resulted in the discovery of five video files on Gibson’s phone depicting the sexual abuse of young children, court records state.

Gibson also admitted under questioning to viewing child pornography on the internet, prosecutors said.

Due to his previous conviction in a state court for possessing and distributing child pornography, Gibson now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years, up to a maximum of 20 years, on the federal charge.

Gibson’s prison sentence will be followed by five years to life of supervised release. He also faces a maximum fine of $250,000.
