On Tuesday, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg requested to delay former and President-elect Donald Trump’s sentencing on the thirty-four felony counts of falsifying business records until 2029, meanwhile the defense team is seeking a complete dismissal.
In recent months, former and President-elect Trump had been at the center of several legal battles throughout the country, although the charges brought against him by Bragg in New York went the furthest.
Following Trump’s substantial electoral win earlier this month, however, questions were raised about how these challenges will proceed, particularly with respect to the felony counts levied against him by Bragg.

According to Fox News Digital, a source close to Trump and his legal team referred to Bragg’s request for a delay as a “a total failure of the prosecution.”
“Their case is in shambles and now everyone knows it is on its way to the ash heap of history,” the source told Fox News Digital. “This thing is not coming back in five years — no one would argue it is.”
“This case is effectively over,” the source said. “It is a major victory for President Trump.”
Judge Juan Merchan recently granted a stay of all deadlines associated with the former and president-elect’s conviction proceedings in this case, including the previously-scheduled November 26 sentencing date.
Trump’s attorneys are seeking to have the case dismissed by the court altogether, a move that prosecutors appear to oppose.
In a letter sent to Judge Merchan Wednesday, Trump defense attorney and now-nominee for Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche demanded that the case be “immediately dismissed.”
“On November 5, 2024, the Nation’s People issued a mandate that supersedes the political motivations of [District Attorney of New York]’s ‘People,’” Blanche wrote. “This case must be immediately dismissed.”
Blanche argued that Bragg “appears to not yet be ready to dismiss this politically-motivated and fatally flawed case, which is what is mandated by the law and will happen as justice takes its course.”
Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement to Fox News Digital that Bragg’s request for a stay is “a total and definitive victory for President Trump and the American People who elected him in a landslide.”
“The Manhattan DA has conceded that this Witch Hunt cannot continue,” Cheung said. “The lawless case is now stayed, and President Trump’s legal team is moving to get it dismissed once and for all.”
Following a years-long investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, thirty-four felony charges of falsifying business records were brought against the former and president-elect; Trump plead not guilty on all counts.
This resulted in a six-week trial held during the height of campaign season for which Trump was required to be physically present in the courtroom. The jury ultimately found Trump guilty on all thirty-four charges.
In the coming weeks, Judge Merchan will be tasked with deciding the case’s future as he rules on these requests.
