A 21-year-old driving without a license led Portland Police on a high-speed chase Wednesday before being apprehended and found in possession of a handgun and significant quantities of illegal drugs.

Police say that shortly after 4 a.m. on Wednesday, an officer observed a vehicle with a diver asleep behind the wheel in the middle of the road near the Walton Street train tracks.

The driver fled from police after a brief conversation and drove away at a high rate of speed, eventually crashing the vehicle into a tree at 189 Ocean Ave. just blocks away, police said.

The suspect then fled on foot, which prompted Portland Police to call in a tracking K-9 unit from Falmouth. The K-9 unit led officers directly to the suspect, who police say was hiding behind 205 Ocean Ave.

Arrested was 21-year-old Hamsa Omar, who was charged with aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs, two counts of unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs, unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, aggravated criminal mischief, operating a vehicle without a license, driving to endanger and failing to stop for an officer — a total of eight charges.

Police say that Omar was fond in possession of a handgun, 17 grams of cocaine, seven grams of fentanyl, several oxycontin pills and $5,753 in cash.

Omar was transported to the Cumberland County Jail, however as of Thursday morning it appears that Omar is no longer in custody.

In a Wednesday statement, Portland Police thanked the Falmouth Police Department for their assistance with Omar’s apprehension.

I can’t believe this is what the democrats have traded for the idyllic maine way of life. They are destroyers of everything they touch. I truly believe they’re still pissed that the civilized people made them give up slavery and that they’d do anything to get it back.
