A 16-year-old girl was shot in the leg and her older sister was injured during an assault on Dennison Street in Auburn early Wednesday morning, Auburn Police announced.

Police say they responded to the area of Winter Street and Dennison Street in Auburn after receiving multiple calls reporting that a female had been shot in the leg.

Upon arrival at the scene, an Auburn Police officer applied a tourniquet to the 16-year-old female’s leg in order to control the bleeding.

The girl was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, alongside her 17-year-old sister who had unknown minor injuries, police said.

According to the department’s preliminary investigation, the two teen girls were walking on Dennison Street with friends when they were approached by a vehicle.

Police say a black male and white female exited the vehicle and began assaulting the 17-year-old female victim.

During the assault, a firearm was discharged and struck the 16-year-old female in the leg.

Victims and witnesses reported that the younger 16-year-old stabbed the male subject with her pocketknife in an attempt to help her older sister, who was being assaulted by the male, an Auburn Police detective learned during interviews.

The male suspect fled toward Turner Street prior to police arrival.

The investigation into this incident remains active, police said Wednesday afternoon.
