Officials, along with local fishermen aiding in the search, identified a period of “slack water,” a time of reduced motion that increases visibility and provides better conditions for divers.
Using a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV), officials discovered the sunken wreck of the fishing vessel “Sudden Impact” that had been reported missing on Saturday.
Concerned family members reported that the ship had gone missing along with its owner, Chester Barrett, and his son, Aaron, both of South Addison.
Local fishermen previously discovered the location of the wreck but were stopped in their recovery efforts by the U.S. Coast Guard due to safety concerns.
When officials did manage to confirm the ship’s presence in 160 feet of water at the mouth of the Moose River in Washington County.
The ROV found what officials believe to be a body, suggesting that Barrett and his son likely drowned when their ship sank.
Officials did not speculate about the cause of the wreck and were unable to carry out recovery operations on Wednesday.
They promised to consult with deep-water salvage experts to determine whether recovery would be feasible.
Very very sad news .
May these fishermen rest in peace .
