South Portland police say three masked suspects allegedly assaulted and threatened an ATM technician during a robbery at Bank of America on Monday morning, making off with an undetermined amount of cash.
South Portland Police responded to an armed robbery at 425 Philbrook Ave. on Monday, June 30, at approximately 10 a.m.
Officers arrived to find a male ATM technician who had reportedly been punched and threatened with a gun by three suspects demanding he open the ATM vault door.
According to police, the victim described the attackers as three young Black males wearing ski masks.
Police say a preliminary investigation suggests the suspects were lying in wait for the technician, who was dispatched to repair a fault in the card reader attached to the entry door.
The card reader reportedly showed an alarm fault at around 2 a.m. that morning, which police believe the suspects intentionally damaged to lure the technician to the scene.
The suspects allegedly assaulted the victim and threatened to shoot him if he did not comply with their demands to open the ATM vault door. Police say the suspects fled with an undetermined amount of money. The investigation is ongoing.
