A Lewiston man faces charges after he allegedly caused the complete shutdown of one of the two bridges connecting Cape Cod with the rest of Massachusetts on Friday night while drunk driving.

Garret Mullen, 37, of Lewiston, was allegedly driving on Massachusetts’s Bourne Bridge on Friday night in his Ford F-250 when he rear-ended an SUV at around 9:30 p.m., causing a serious crash.

As a result, first responders were forced to shut down the entire bridge to access the scene of the crash.

Responders discovered that three of the SUV’s occupants were allegedly injured. All three required ambulance transportation to a local hospital, and one required trauma care.

At the scene, Massachusetts State Police allegedly found that Mullen was driving while intoxicated and illegally possessed a firearm.

Mullen was taken into custody, where he faces charges for operating under the influence resulting in serious injury, negligent operation, speeding, and multiple firearms offenses.

The bridge eventually re-opened at 10:40 p.m.
