NH State Police Trooper Noah Gooch conducted a routine traffic stop of a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta at 2:47 a.m. Gooch had a brief interaction with the driver, Aaron C. Thurber, 21, of Hooksett.
Thurber then allegedly drove off at high speed in an attempt to flee the officer before the stop could be concluded, sparking a police pursuit.
During the pursuit, just South of the Hooksett toll booth, state police successfully deployed road spikes, deflating one of Thurber’s tires.
Despite this, Thurber allegedly continued fleeing police and drove through a work zone, where he reportedly almost struck a construction worker.
He then allegedly made an illegal U-turn on the highway using a restricted access crossover, and began heading North.
The pursuit continued into Northfield, NH, where Thurber allegedly careened off the highway and struck an embankment, causing his Volkswagen to roll over.
Police took Thurber into custody, at which point he was transported to a local hospital for treatment for serious injuries. Police did not specify whether the injuries were life-threatening.
He faces charges for reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, disobeying a police officer, and reckless operation. None of the charges indicate that Thurber was under the influence of drugs or alcohol while driving, and it is unclear what prompted the initial traffic stop or why Thurber allegedly fled.
