At around 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, the Rockland Police Department received a report that a registered sex offender, Matthew “Nate” Boegel, 27, of Bowdoin, was having contact with a juvenile.
The Rockland Police launched an investigation with help from the Camden Police Department and the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Department.
Law enforcement found Boegel together with the juvenile in Camden and arrested him on an unrelated warrant. They did not specify how Boegel became subject to an unrelated warrant.
Rockland’s Criminal Investigation Division continued looking into the situation and uncovered further evidence leading them to believe that Boegel allegedly sexually assaulted a minor.
While he was already in custody, Boegel was charged by Rockland detectives on Friday with felony sexual abuse of minors and violation of conditions of release.
The police department thanked the individual who initially reported seeing Boegel with the minor.

Boegel appears to have a lengthy history of sexually assaulting minors. In 2016, he was reportedly charged at age 18 with sexually assaulting two girls, aged 12 and 13.
Shortly after he was released for those crimes, having served just nine months in prison, Boegel was convicted again of sexually abusing girls between the ages of 14 and 16 and illegally furnishing them with marijuana.
