Two rallies staged opposite one another in Scarborough on Wednesday highlighted sharply divided views on immigration enforcement in Maine.
A pro-law enforcement group, led by Trish Burnell and attended by Republican gubernatorial candidate David Jones and the campaign manager for Robert Wessels, gathered in front of The Holy Donut on Route 1 in support of police and federal immigration officers. Participants waved flags and held signs backing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and local law enforcement agencies.
At the same time, an anti-ICE demonstration took place in front of Scarborough Town Hall. The group had originally planned to march and protest at the ICE facility in Scarborough but changed locations after Burnell organized her rally.
Protesters at the anti-ICE event claimed that federal agents were detaining individuals without due process and removing people from their homes. They voiced support for U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME)’s recent statement alleging that ICE officials were preventing attorneys from meeting with clients at the Scarborough facility.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Tricia McLaughlin has harshly disputed Pingree’s claims, saying her statements are “false and politically motivated.”
Scarborough Town Council member and chair of the Scarborough Democrats, Jonathan Anderson, scoffed at the statement by McLaughlin: “Show the proof. Transparency is important.”
Burnell stated that “if Chellie Pingree doesn’t understand the laws she swore to uphold, then she needs to get out of office.”
Jones said in response to Pingree: “We have never seen her around until her daughter decided to run for governor.”
The dueling rallies reflected the growing tension surrounding federal immigration operations in Maine and the broader national debate over ICE enforcement.
