U.S. Sen. Susan Collins announced her support for the nomination of David St. Pierre, the former Lewiston police chief, to serve as U.S. Marshal for the District of Maine. His nomination requires Senate confirmation.

Collins praised St. Pierre’s more than three decades of law enforcement service, citing his leadership during the 2023 mass shooting in Lewiston.

“I strongly support David St, Pierre’s nomination to serve as U.S. Marshall for the District of Maine. Chief St. Pierre has dedicated more than three decades to protecting the people of Lewiston and strengthening partnerships across local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies,” she said.

She also singled St. Pierre out for his role in addressing Lewiston’s tragedy two years ago:

“His steady leadership during the most challenging moment in Maine’s recent history, the tragic mass shooting of 2023, demonstrating his professionalism, composure, and deep commitment to both public safety and public service. With his extensive experience and unique skill set, I am confident that Chief St. Pierre will serve the people of Maine admirably as U.S. Marshal.”

St. Pierre served with the Lewiston Police Department for more than 30 years and was chief from 2021 until his retirement last month. As chief, he oversaw a department of 99 employees and managed a budget exceeding $10 million.

During his career, he held multiple positions including patrol officer, state drug agent, detective sergeant and patrol lieutenant, gaining experience in criminal investigations, internal affairs and interagency coordination.

St. Pierre led the coordination of hundreds of local, state and federal officers during the 2023 mass shooting, the deadliest in Maine’s history. He also guided the planning and transition to Lewiston’s new public safety facility, which houses multiple agencies under one roof.

A 2018 graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, St. Pierre is a member of the FBI National Academy Associates, the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Maine Chiefs of Police Association.

The U.S. Marshals Service is the enforcement arm of the federal courts, and its officers play roles in multiple aspects of federal law enforcement activities. Actor Tommy Lee Jones popularized the roles they play in an eponymous 1998 film.
