On November 3, 2024, the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department received reports that Nicholas Estes, 32, had sexually assaulted a female minor in St. Albans.
The case was handed over to Detective Jeremy Leal for investigation. With help from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Children’s Advocacy Center of Kennebec and Somerset Counties, Leal gathered enough evidence to secure an arrest warrant for Estes and took him into custody on January 14.
Estes pleaded guilty earlier this month to unlawful sexual contact, Class D. He was sentenced to just 180 days in prison, with all but 50 days suspended, followed by a single year of probation.
He must also register as a Tier 1 sex offender, undergo treatment and counseling, have no contact with the victim, and have no contact with anyone under 18.
