Javier Amateco-Navarrette, 38, was a passenger in a vehicle in Oakland when the driver was pulled over by U.S. Border Patrol agents on September 16.

According to court records, Amateco-Navarrette admitted during that stop that he is a Mexican citizen and that he was in the U.S. illegally.

He was previously removed from the U.S. on two separate occasions in 2018.

Amateco-Navarrette now faces up to two years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

On the same day Amateco-Navarrette pleaded guilty, an illegal immigrant from Spain was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Bangor for the same crime.

Jose Angel Hidalgo-Torres, 20, pleaded guilty to illegal re-entry on August 12, 2025, after he was found in Calais shortly after entering the country on July 18.

He was previously deported in 2024.

Hidalgo Torres was sentenced to time served but was turned over to immigration authorities after his sentencing.
