The CEO of the Maine Celtics just wrote a real estate check for nearly $60 million.
Wycliffe Grousbeck, who heads the Boston Celtics, which own the Maine basketball affiliate, got a real deal on his new oceanfront home.
After being built last year, it was originally on the market for $80 million.
The builder got no offers so he chopped the price by $10 million.
Still no takers so he lopped off another $12 million.
That’s when Grousbeck pounced.
The home sits on 1.24 acres, with 125 feet on the ocean.
The Maine Celtics, a pro basketball team in the NBA G League based in Portland, is affiliated with the NBA Boston Celtics.
The Maine Celtics play their home games at the Portland Expo.
The Boston Celtics purchased the Maine Red Claws in 2019 from Maine Basketball and renamed the team the Maine Celtics in 2021.
The New York Post credited an outlet called Gimme Shelter with the scoop on Grousbeck’s home purchase.
Built by Farrell Companies and designed by Will Minnear Architect, the 8,600-square-foot residence features eight bedrooms, 8.5 baths – and a 4,400-square-foot rooftop entertaining space with a putting green.
“Just imagine the parties they could throw!” quipped one broker familiar with the oceanfront home.
The main floor is anchored by a great room and an adjacent chef’s kitchen.
There’s also an oceanfront bedroom suite that opens to the pool terrace, while an additional upstairs main bedroom suite comes with a private lounge or office, dual dressing rooms and a spa-like bath.
Six more bedroom suites open to outdoor space.
Outside, there’s an infinity-edge pool and a heated six-car garage.
Seems the only thing it’s missing is a full-sized basketball court.
The Maine Celtics owner isn’t quite ready to live in the Pine Tree State — maybe because of the punitive state income taxes.
The lux digs will keep him in Bridgehampton, N.Y.
