The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fatal house fire in Washington County after firefighters discovered a body inside the burned structure Sunday evening.

Officials were called at about 5:58 p.m. to 624 Main Street in Meddybemps, where the local fire chief reported the homeowner was likely still inside. Fire crews arrived to find the home fully engulfed, with flames spreading to a vehicle in the driveway.

More than a half-dozen departments responded and worked in heavy snow conditions to bring the fire under control.

A team of four State Fire Marshal investigators located the remains of an adult inside the home at approximately 8:51 p.m. The body was transported to a local funeral home, where the Office of Chief Medical Examiner will work to determine the cause of death and confirm the victim’s identity.

Investigators returned to the scene Monday to continue examining the property and determine how the fire started.
