A 75-year-old woman has died after being struck by a vehicle at a busy crossing in Portland, police said Friday.

The incident occurred about 7:10 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Franklin Street and Marginal Way, when the woman was crossing the street and was hit by a vehicle driven by a 48-year-old Portland man.

According to witnesses, the woman was running with a group of people and they all crossed the street against the signal just prior to the crash.

The woman was taken to Maine Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and later died, though authorities have not yet released her name.

Police said no charges have been filed as of Friday morning and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information is asked to contact the Portland Police Department at 207-874-8532 or 207-874-8575.
