State Sen. Joe Rafferty, a Democrat from Kennebunk who has represented Maine’s District 34 for the past five years, announced on November 12 that he will not seek reelection in 2026. District 34 includes North Berwick, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Berwick and Wells.

Rafferty’s decision marks the end of a legislative tenure shaped by his long career in public service – first in education and later in politics.

Before entering the Legislature, he spent decades as a teacher and head football coach at Kennebunk High School. He also served as president of the teachers’ union, roles highlighted in the release as part of his commitment to “improving the lives of students and educators alike.” Rafferty retired from education prior to running for office but remained a prominent figure in local school and community affairs.

Throughout his time in the Senate, Rafferty worked on issues connected to education, workforce needs, and community support systems, drawing on his background to guide his legislative focus. His announcement did not specify his reasons for stepping away but expressed appreciation for the opportunity to represent the district.

Rafferty also used the occasion to endorse Rep. Daniel Sayre (D-Kennebunk), who announced he will seek the District 34 seat in 2026. Sayre currently serves in the Maine House and has represented part of the same region. His decision to run sets up an early campaign transition in a district that has seen steady Democratic leadership under Rafferty.

His retirement announcement statement offered no further details about Sayre’s platform or campaign plans, but Rafferty’s endorsement is expected to give the House member a boost as he enters the race.
