State officials are investigating the deaths of two people discovered inside a Wade residence Tuesday, where authorities say carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected.

Maine State Police and Emergency Medical Services responded to a welfare check at 505 N. Wade Road around 11:15 a.m. and found both occupants deceased. Investigators with the Office of State Fire Marshal were called to the scene.

According to the Fire Marshal’s Office, the furnace exhaust pipe inside the home had been improperly installed and had become disconnected, allowing exhaust fumes to vent directly into the living space. Evidence at the scene indicates the two residents likely died from carbon monoxide exposure.

The victims were identified as 64-year-old Brian Merchant and 56-year-old Laurie Ridgway, who lived together at the address. The Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta will conduct examinations to determine the official cause of death.

Authorities reminded Maine residents to ensure carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms are working and to have heating systems regularly inspected. No additional information has been released.
