The Sanford Police Department arrested an alleged robber on Sunday who reportedly stole from a Springvale 7-Eleven gas station six days earlier, sparking a manhunt.

On December 3, the Sanford Police Department released an image from security footage inside the 7-Eleven, showing a suspect allegedly involved in a theft from the store that took place at around 9:00 p.m. on December 1.

Police requested public assistance in identifying the suspect.

Five days after requesting public assistance, the Sanford Police Department announced the arrest of Matthew Sommer of Sanford, who was reportedly identified as the man in the security footage.

The Sanford Police, working with the Southern Maine Special Response Team, secured and executed a search warrant for a Bodwell Street residence and an arrest warrant for Sommer.

Law enforcement took Sommer into custody during the execution of the warrant and charged him with robbery.

He was transported to the York County Jail, where he was issued a $25,000 bail.

It is not clear whether the Sanford Police Department’s request for public assistance aided in the investigation.
